The theme is the 3D illusion. The background is laid from nearly two thousand small dice that form an image through their pip counts alone: an eye. That eye looks straight through the airplane, made of red and blue plastic film like the lenses of a pair of 3D glasses. There are in fact two airplanes, one red, one blue, offset by a few centimetres, so that together they open up spatial depth. To let the film stretch cleanly over the frame, it is sewn on by hand with a thousand fine needle pricks. Look closely and you see double, and suddenly three-dimensional.
